How to Save Money by Repairing Your Oven Using Second-Hand Parts from eBay

Oven repairs can seem complex and expensive, I’ve written this article to help guide you in repairing your own oven using replacement parts that can be bought much cheaper, and in working order, from eBay.

All you need is a little bit of DIY know how, a couple of basic tools, a repair guide such as this one we made for fixing a gas stove burner that won’t light, and between $20-100 depending on which part you need and which manufacturer of oven you have.

1. Diagnose the Issue

Before diving into part searches, first pinpoint the exact issue with your oven. Common problems include:

  • Heating Element Failure: If your oven isn’t heating properly, a faulty element may be the cause.
  • Faulty Thermostat: If your oven temperature is inconsistent or overheats, the thermostat may need replacing.
  • Damaged Door Seal: This can cause heat to escape, reducing the oven’s efficiency.
  • Control Board Issues: If the oven doesn’t respond to inputs or there is no power to the display..etc, a malfunctioning control board may be the issue.

If you’re unsure, consult your oven’s manual or search online forums and videos for troubleshooting guides specific to your model. If you do end up purchasing the wrong part, make sure that the eBay seller you buy from has a free returns policy so that you can then always get your money back.

2. Research the Replacement Part

Once you’ve identified the issue, the next step is to find the right replacement part. This involves:

  • Locating the Part Number: Check your oven’s manual or the part itself for a label indicating the part number.
  • Ensuring Compatibility: Make sure the part is compatible with your oven model. You can typically find this information in the product description or on the manufacturer’s website. Ask the eBay seller if you’re unsure.

If you have lost your own manual, then check out manualslib.com they have most modern manuals available to download as PDF files or view online for free.

3. Why Buy Used Parts?

Buying second-hand parts on eBay can be a game-changer for your wallet. Here’s why:

  • Cost Savings: Second-hand parts are often significantly cheaper than new ones.
  • Availability: For older ovens, discontinued parts may be difficult to find elsewhere, but eBay often has them.
  • Eco-Friendly: Opting for used parts reduces waste and is a more sustainable choice.

Many eBay sellers specialize in salvaging usable parts from broken or outdated appliances, allowing you to find reliable parts at a fraction of the cost.

4. How to Search for Used Oven Parts on eBay

To effectively search for second-hand oven parts on eBay, follow these tips:

  • Search by Part Number and Brand: Be as specific as possible. For example, “Bosch Oven Heating Element 00357899.”
  • Use Filters: Narrow down results by condition, selecting “Used” or “Seller Refurbished” to find second-hand items.
  • Sort By Price: Sort price from lowest to highest, this way you increase your chances of finding a bargain.
  • Check Seller Ratings: Look for sellers with a high rating (98% or above) and positive reviews specifically for appliance parts.
  • Read Descriptions Carefully: Ensure the part is described as fully functional. Some listings sell parts “for spares or repairs,” meaning they may not work.
  • Always Check the Returns Policy: Many private sellers do not accept returns, always check the returns policy (see below).

5. Questions to Ask the Seller

Before purchasing, reach out to the seller with a few key questions:

  • Is the part fully functional? Confirm that it’s been tested or came from a working oven and is in working condition.
  • Any cosmetic damage? Some parts may have minor wear and tear that won’t affect performance.
  • Return policy? Check if returns are accepted in case the part doesn’t fit or isn’t as expected.
  • Will they accept an offer? Under the price of the item you might see ‘or Best Offer’ this means you can try and haggle the price a little bit, from my experience most sellers will be willing to take at least 10% of the price for you so that they can get the sale.

Seller Best Offer

For example I would try an offer of $26-27 on this item, although this seller has poor feedback and does not accept returns.

6. Estimated Pricing for Second-Hand vs. New Parts

Let’s compare the cost of second-hand oven parts from eBay with the price of brand-new parts for three popular oven brands: BoschWhirlpool, and Samsung. Below is an estimate for the most common replacement parts:

PartBrandUsed Price on eBayNew Price
Heating ElementBosch$25 – $45$80 – $120
Heating ElementWhirlpool$20 – $35$70 – $100
Heating ElementSamsung$30 – $50$90 – $130
Oven ThermostatBosch$15 – $30$50 – $80
Oven ThermostatWhirlpool$20 – $40$60 – $90
Oven ThermostatSamsung$25 – $35$70 – $110
Control BoardBosch$50 – $100$200 – $300
Control BoardWhirlpool$40 – $80$150 – $250
Control BoardSamsung$60 – $100$180 – $280

As you can see, second-hand parts are often 50% to 70% cheaper than buying new. For example, a new Bosch control board can cost up to $300, while a used one in working condition can be found on eBay for around $100.

Keep in mind that these are just ballpark figures and depending on how many are on the market and what kind of oven you have the price will vary, some of you will even get lucky and a get a great deal below market value.

7. Installing the Part

Once your part arrives, it’s time to install it. Keep these tips in mind:

  • Turn off the Power: Before doing anything, unplug your oven or turn off the circuit breaker to avoid electrical hazards.
  • Follow a Guide or Video: If you’re new to repairs, search for a tutorial that walks you through the process for your specific part and oven model.
  • Have the Right Tools: You may need basic tools like screwdrivers, pliers, or a multimeter to test electrical components.

8. When to Call a Professional

While DIY repairs can save a lot of money, some situations require professional help. If you have a gas oven or if the repair involves complex wiring, it’s best to call in a technician. Even then, you can still save by sourcing the part yourself and having a professional install it.

9. Long-Term Savings Tips

Beyond your initial repair, follow these maintenance habits to prolong the life of your oven:

  • Clean Regularly: A clean oven functions more efficiently and is less prone to breakdowns.
  • Inspect and Replace Seals: Worn door seals reduce efficiency and should be replaced as needed.
